In my work, through the mediums of paint, ink and pencil, I hope to explore the relevance and meaning of the nude in modern art. In contemporary society what does the female nude mean? It is an enduring image; almost synonymous with ‘Fine Art’, but what is its importance in the twenty-first century? In a post-feminist society is an image of a naked woman (even when painted by a feminist artist) objectification? What is the relationship between pornographic images and those images of women which reside within art galleries? Do images of naked women considered to be art, give credence to images of naked women for objectification as another form of artistic appreciation for the female form? My work focuses on the fragmentation of the female body seen in pornography and the reduction of the female form to an object, looking at how complicit women are in this action and how these actions help us to interpret the female form in artistic representation.
