My work is object-based as I’m concerned with making small ‘concept’ models that have the potential to be made in a much larger scale, providing the resources and time were available. Shape and form are the main elements involved in my practice, as I create abstract, curved forms which are intended to be approached from varying viewpoints. Materials are an important part of my practice; I experiment with string, wood, copper, card and other materials to create objects which require a variety of treatments and techniques to manipulate them into the preferred shape. The process of handling materials is important to me, as I am receptive to how they react to forces I apply to them. Many of my works contain tension, which I find exciting, as the materials attempt to rebel against the positions I have imposed on them. The process of making the forms is based around my judgement of ‘ideal’ curves and shapes within the context of the whole, unified object. Photography is an important aspect of my work, especially in communicating ephemeral qualities to the viewer. I also use photography to draw attention to specific viewpoints of my objects from which I feel the shapes work particularly well.
